Wärtsilä Shore Power Solutions

Wrtsil

Shore power systems that connect vessels to onshore electricity in port using IEC/IEEE 80005 plug technology, for hotel load or charging onboard batteries; newbuild and retrofit.

Description

Wärtsilä shore power solutions let a vessel plug in to the onshore electricity grid while in port, so auxiliary engines can be shut down, reducing fuel use, emissions and noise. Shore power can also charge onboard energy storage systems of battery-powered and hybrid vessels. Wärtsilä has delivered more than 150 systems.

How it works

The port grid (e.g. 8 kV, 50 Hz) feeds a power conversion system in an e-house or container that converts power to the IEC standard – 60 Hz and, for most vessels, 6.6 kV – or to DC for battery charging. The conversion system includes converter, transformer, cooling and fire-fighting. A cable handling system lifts the cables to the ship, where they connect to an incoming panel. Standardised IEC/IEEE 80005-1 plug solutions ensure interoperability across ports.

Onboard components

  • Incoming panel
  • Transformer (if the ship grid is low voltage)
  • Shore power switchboard
  • Wärtsilä shore power control system with built-in safety features

Variants

  • Alternative Marine Power (AMP): standardised shore power supply for hotel load in port
  • Charging: shore power tailored to transferring energy to onboard batteries, with short connection times for ferries with limited turnaround time

Applications

Ferries and cruise ships, RoRo vessels, container vessels, tankers (oil, chemical, LNG), bulk carriers, offshore support vessels and special-purpose vessels; newbuild and retrofit installations. EU legislation requires container and passenger vessels to use shore power in EU ports from 2030.
