CFD-optimised, vessel-specific steel grid for tunnel thrusters that reduces transit resistance while increasing side thrust; full-scale tests showed over 1% fuel saving per tunnel and 10% more side thrust.
Description
Elogrid™ by Wärtsilä is a customised steel grid fitted at the ends of a vessel's tunnel (transverse) thruster. Unlike conventional grids, which reduce thrust, Elogrid lowers hull resistance in transit while maintaining or increasing side thrust. It is supplied under a licence agreement between Wärtsilä and Elomatic.

Design factors
Inlet flow to the propeller, compact waterjet effect on the pressure side, grid flow resistance in transit, structural stiffness, hull shape, thruster properties and vessel operating profile.
Proven results (Viking Line RoPax M/S Gabriella)
- More than 1% fuel saved per tunnel
- Side thrust improved by 10% (bollard pull test)
- Around 25% lower vibration levels
- Noise reduced by 2 dB(A) on deck 7
Performance has been validated by CFD and full-scale tests with third-party verification by Bureau Veritas.
Applications
Newbuild and retrofit vessels with large tunnel thrusters and significant transit time: cruise ships, RoPax vessels, ferries, offshore vessels, container ships, bulkers and tankers. Also improves CII.
