Tunnel Thrusters – Electric Motor or Diesel Engine Driven
Thrustmaster geared L-drive tunnel thrusters, 150 hp (100 kW) to 5,000 hp (3,500 kW), tunnel diameters 30–136 in. (762–3,455 mm). Fixed-pitch NiAl bronze propeller, electric or diesel drive, joystick controls. Some models ABS type approved.
Description
Thrustmaster geared tunnel thrusters produce lateral thrust for slow-speed manoeuvring and for dynamic positioning under extreme loads in offshore service. They use fixed-pitch propellers in an L-drive configuration and are driven by a variable-speed electric motor or a diesel engine.

- Example: 30TT150ML, 100 kW, 762 mm tunnel, nominal thrust 16 kN, weight 363 kg (aluminium) or 544 kg (carbon steel)
- Example: 42TT400ML, 300 kW, 1,066 mm tunnel, nominal thrust 43 kN
- ABS Type Approval for the 30 in. mechanical L-drive (150 and 200 hp) and 42 in. mechanical L-drive (400 hp) models
Drive options
- Bi-directional electric motor with VFD, mounted horizontally or vertically to suit the space available
- Diesel engine with marine gear
- Supplied with motors and drives, or made to fit a motor supplied by the customer or shipyard
Components
- Four-blade, symmetrical, fixed-pitch propeller cast in nickel aluminium bronze
- Propeller shaft seals in a 316 stainless steel seal housing with rope guard and bi-directional line cutters
- Up to and including model 90TT2000ML: no external cooling needed. The unit is fully oil-flooded, with a header tank above the waterline that has level and temperature indicators, a LOW/HIGH level switch and a sight glass
- Larger models: a skid-mounted lube oil circulation system (screw pump, filter and heat exchanger), included in the scope of supply
Remote controls
- Bridge panel with friction-held joystick (centre detent) and LCD display
- Built-in ECU gives proportional thrust from zero to full rpm, port and starboard
- Emergency stop, alarms, control transfer between multiple panels, VFD status logic and optional DP system interface
Selection notes
- At 3 knots of vessel speed a tunnel thruster may lose up to 25% of its thrust, and at 7 knots it may produce only half of rated thrust
- The tunnel must be deep enough below the waterline to avoid air ingestion
- On shallow-draft vessels, two or more smaller thrusters can be installed side by side
