Description

Azipod® for open water is ABB's family of gearless, azimuthing podded electric propulsion units ranging from 1 to 22 MW, offering solutions for more than 35 vessel types. Compared with traditional shaftlines, Azipod® can reduce energy consumption by up to 20%.

Product range

  • Azipod® D (1–7.5 MW) – compact, gearless low-power unit with hybrid cooling of the propulsion motor (direct seawater cooling plus active air cooling). Pulling open-propeller and pushing ducted versions; ice classes up to PC5. For cruise, ferry, offshore and special vessels.
  • Azipod® MO (7–12 MW) – mid-power unit with permanent magnet propulsion motor and hybrid cooling; ice classes up to 1A. For cruise, ferry, navy and special vessels.
  • Azipod® XO (12–22 MW) – the most powerful open-water unit, gearless electric drive for the largest vessels; ice classes up to 1A Super. For cruise ships, high-power ferries and special vessels.

Key features

  • 360° steerable thrust; no long shaftlines or gearboxes, reducing energy losses
  • Pulling propeller configuration for clean water inflow
  • Optional nozzle (ducted version) for higher thrust and bollard pull, better DP performance and reduced cavitation – suited to OSVs, tugs and workboats
  • Thruster angle and strut height customized per hull design

Applications

Ferries, cruise ships, OSVs, research vessels, yachts, RoPax and special vessels such as heavy lift ships – from about 34 m (e.g. the Suomenlinna ferry) up to the largest cruise ships of approximately 365 m.

Service

Lifetime service including preventive maintenance, dry-docking, condition monitoring, spare parts, upgrades and operator training.
