Azipod® Propulsion
ABB Azipod® is a gearless steerable electric propulsion system with the drive motor in a pod outside the hull, rotating 360°, used on more than 35 vessel types including ice-class ships.
Description
Azipod® propulsion is ABB's gearless, steerable electric propulsion system in which the electric drive motor is housed in a submerged pod outside the ship's hull. The unit rotates 360 degrees, both driving and steering the vessel without a conventional rudder or shaftline. Developed in the late 1980s, it now propels more than 35 vessel types.
Key features
- No gearboxes or shafts, freeing space and allowing more flexible vessel designs
- Unrestricted water flow to the propeller; fuel savings of up to 20% depending on vessel type
- Reduced noise and vibration for passenger comfort and lower structural fatigue loading
- Precise manoeuvrability and dynamic positioning capability
Range
- Open water units (1–22 MW) for large and small vessels
- High ice-class units for icebreaking cargo ships, tankers, naval craft, carriers and Arctic/Antarctic research vessels, with strong open-water performance; optional Azipod® ice load measurement system
Applications
Cruise ships, ferries, icebreakers, offshore vessels and special vessels.
