MAN Smart HYBRID Experience Operating Modes

Operating modes of the MAN Engines marine hybrid system for yachts and workboats: diesel, boost, battery-electric, diesel-electric, cross-over and hotel mode.

Description

The MAN Engines marine hybrid system (MAN Smart HYBRID Experience) offers several operating modes, selected and switched through the central SMART HYBRID CONTROL energy management system, to suit yachts and workboats.

Operating modes

  • Diesel mode: the diesel engine(s) drive the propeller while the e-motor can generate power to charge batteries and supply the hotel grid, reducing genset hours. Example: two diesels at 1,600 rpm each generating 48 kW per driveline, 11 kW to the hotel grid and 2 x 40 kW to the batteries.
  • Boost mode: battery-powered e-motors add power to the combustion engines for maximum power density, better low-speed support and acceleration. Example: diesels and e-motors at 1,815 rpm with each e-motor adding 400 kW.
  • Battery-electric mode: propulsion and onboard power supplied solely by batteries for locally emission-free, quiet, vibration-free operation, e.g. in protected zones, port manoeuvres or at night. Batteries can be charged from shore power, onboard gensets or the main engines.
  • Diesel-electric mode: onboard gensets, supported by the batteries, supply propulsion and power while the main engines are off, reducing main engine hours, noise, emissions and fuel use.
  • Cross-over mode and hotel mode are also available.
