Integrated propeller and rudder design for coastal and seagoing vessels that reduces flow separation behind the propeller hub and rudder resistance, with proven 2–9% power savings at trial speed.

Description

Wärtsilä EnergoPac is an optimised propulsion and manoeuvring solution that integrates the design of the propeller and rudder to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Each system is tailored to the vessel, optimising energy efficiency without compromising manoeuvrability or comfort. It was developed in co-operation with rudder specialist Becker Marine Systems.

How it works

  • Reduces flow separation behind the propeller hub
  • High-lift rudder performance requires smaller steering angles, reducing rudder resistance during course keeping
  • Creates less drag than conventional rudder systems for the same course-keeping capability

Key benefits

  • Proven power savings of 2–9% at trial speed, depending on vessel type, operating profile and reference propeller and rudder
  • Excellent manoeuvrability
  • Significant reduction of propeller-induced pressure pulses on the hull, lowering vibration

Applications

Coastal and ocean-going vessels with a significant share of free sailing time, particularly vessels with large propeller hubs and highly loaded controllable pitch propellers: RoRo vessels, ferries, container and multipurpose vessels, and ice-class vessels. Also applicable with fixed pitch propellers.
