Wärtsilä 46TS-DF Dual-Fuel Marine Engine

Wrtsil

Medium-speed dual-fuel engine with two-stage turbocharging, 6 to 16 cylinders and 7.8–20.8 MW at 600 rpm (1,300 kW/cyl), with NextDF methane slip reduction; IMO Tier III in gas and diesel modes with SCR.

Description

The Wärtsilä 46TS-DF is a large-bore, medium-speed dual-fuel marine engine with two-stage turbocharging. It runs on gas or liquid fuel, switching between them according to cost, availability and local regulations, and its modular design allows future upgrades including alternative fuels.

Technical data

  • Configurations: 6 to 16 cylinders
  • Power output: 7.8–20.8 MW at 600 rpm
  • Power density: 1,300 kW per cylinder
  • Emissions: IMO Tier III in gas and diesel modes when combined with SCR

Key features

  • Two-stage charge air system
  • Digital common rail fuel injection for smoke-free operation
  • Variable valve timing
  • Thermal insulation for safety and reduced radiated heat loss
  • Fully electrical control devices
  • Improved heat recovery
  • 10% fewer cylinders for the same output, reducing maintenance
  • Can be optimised for constant speed or propeller curve operation

NextDF technology

Advanced combustion control, latest valve timing and injector technology, and new air-fuel ratio control logic reduce methane slip and NOx formation.

Applications

Main propulsion in diesel-electric, mechanical and hybrid installations: cruise ships, ferries, medium to large gas tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and special vessels such as dredgers.
