Everllence B&W ME-LGIA Ammonia Two-Stroke Engine

Low-speed two-stroke dual-fuel engine running on ammonia with as little as 5% pilot oil at 100% load, always fitted with SCR for IMO Tier III; available for newbuilds or as a retrofit to electronically controlled engines.

Description

The Everllence B&W ME-LGIA is a low-speed two-stroke dual-fuel engine designed to run on ammonia, a carbon- and sulphur-free fuel. It is based on the Liquid Gas Injection (LGI) concept used in Everllence's methanol and LPG dual-fuel engines and is available for newbuilds or as a modular dual-fuel retrofit for existing electronically controlled engines.

Key features

  • Ammonia mode: 5% specific pilot oil consumption at 100% load (L1 rating, Tier II mode), with 95% of energy from ammonia
  • Target heat rate equal to fuel oil mode; fuel oil mode targets identical performance to a conventional diesel engine
  • No carbon or sulphur emissions from ammonia combustion; approx. 50% less NOx than diesel combustion
  • Always equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to meet IMO Tier III and eliminate ammonia slip in the exhaust

Safety systems

  • Ammonia containment systems, sensors, system ventilation and double-walled piping
  • Optimized ammonia auxiliary system with injection technology and ammonia catch system ensuring no ammonia above 10 ppm is vented to atmosphere

Development status

First ammonia combustion on the research engine in July 2023, full-scale testing from November 2024 and a successful Type Approval Test at Research Centre Copenhagen in June 2026. The first commercial engine is due in service in 2026; engines have been ordered for pure car and truck carriers.
