Wärtsilä In-Situ Machining Services

Wrtsil

On-site precision machining of installed engine and machinery components – crankshafts, engine blocks, stern tubes, shafts, rudder bearings, gearboxes, thruster housings – without dismantling.

Description

Wärtsilä in-situ machining services restore large installed components directly onboard a vessel, in port or at an energy or heavy-industry site, avoiding dismantling, heavy lifting and workshop transport. The service is used both for planned maintenance findings and for time-critical repairs after damage, across brands and asset types including two-stroke and four-stroke engines.

Portable tools are used for boring, milling, grinding, turning and flange facing to restore surfaces, alignment, fit, critical dimensions and sealing interfaces.

Applications

  • Engines: crankshaft machining and restoration (in some cases without removing the engine or dismantling the crankshaft); engine block machining including cylinder liner sealing and guide surfaces, main bearing, camshaft and gear bores; flange facing
  • Shaft line, propulsion and steering: stern tube boring, propulsion shaft machining and polishing, rudder neck bearing machining
  • Gearboxes, thrusters and auxiliaries: gearbox restoration machining, thruster housing machining
  • Industrial: driveshafts, cylinder housings, contact or landing surfaces

Process

1. Technical assessment and definition of scope, tolerances, methods and acceptance criteria

2. Planning and mobilisation of portable machining equipment

3. On-site machining and restoration

4. Verification by measurement and inspection, with documentation (including support for classification society discussions)

5. Return to operation

Work is carried out by trained, certified specialists with standardised procedures, from teams positioned from the Americas to Asia.
