Goltens Repair & Overhaul Enhanced

In-Place Crankshaft Machining and Grinding

In-situ machining and grinding of crankpin and main journals, tail shafts and turbine journals up to 1080 mm diameter without removing the crankshaft.

Service page on Goltens's site

Description

Goltens completed the first in-situ crankshaft grinding in the early 1950s and holds patents on its in-situ crankshaft grinding tooling. Current tooling machines large diesel crankshafts and damaged journals in a fraction of the time of traditional grinding, often in a single cut fillet to fillet. Goltens reports over 25,000 shafts repaired on main and auxiliary engines, and applies the technology to compressors, steam turbine rotors, turbine collector rings and hydro turbine journals.

Key features

  • Machining and grinding of crankpin and main journals up to 1080 mm diameter, including fillets
  • Machining and grinding of tail shafts/shafting up to 1080 mm diameter
  • Machining of damaged journals for steam and hydro turbines
  • Straightening of bent crankshafts and annealing to remove excess hardness
  • Machining or grinding of crankshaft thrust collars; machining of coupling bolt holes
  • Honing and/or blue fitting of crankpin journals
  • Quality control with dimensional checks, surface finish analysis and material testing

Applications

Main and auxiliary engines on ships, stationary power engines and turbines.
