Wärtsilä OPTI Design

Wrtsil

CFD-based propulsion design methodology that optimises propeller, engine and hull together, including full-scale analysis of propeller-hull interaction, to reduce fuel consumption and improve EEDI.

Description

Wärtsilä OPTI Design is a propulsion design methodology that uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and expert design knowledge to match propeller, engine and hull. Rather than optimising the aft-ship flow and propeller separately, it calculates the ship and propeller together to maximise total propulsive efficiency, including hull efficiency and relative rotative efficiency.

Key features

  • CFD analysis of propeller performance and propeller-hull interaction
  • Calculations at both model scale and full scale
  • Short turnaround allowing extra design iterations on hull shape and main propulsion parameters (diameter, RPM)
  • Evaluation of retrofits and energy saving devices
  • Early checking of propulsion and driveline design choices
  • Full-scale CFD for trim optimisation studies
  • Based on experience from more than 10,000 FPPs and 20,000 CPPs produced

Benefits

  • Reduced fuel consumption and exhaust emissions
  • Improved EEDI
  • Lower risk of design defects and shorter design process
