Onboard carbon capture solution (CCS) for ships

Wrtsil

Onboard carbon capture system that removes CO2 from engine exhaust, liquefies and stores it for offloading in port, with up to 70% CO2 reduction from treated exhaust; for retrofit and newbuild vessels on any carbon-based fuel.

Description

Wärtsilä onboard carbon capture solution (CCS) removes CO2 from ship engine exhaust after combustion, liquefies it and stores it on board until it can be offloaded in port. It delivers up to 70% CO2 reduction from treated exhaust streams and has been commercially available since May 2025.

How it works

1. Pre-conditioning: exhaust is cleaned of NOx, SOx and particulate matter (depending on fuel) and cooled

2. Absorption: exhaust is mixed with a liquid solvent that captures the CO2

3. Desorption: the CO2-rich solvent is heated to release CO2; lean solvent is reused

4. Liquefaction: CO2 is compressed, dried and cooled to liquid

5. Storage: liquid CO2 is pumped to onboard tanks

Reference: Clipper Eris

World's first full-scale onboard CCS at sea, on Solvang's ethylene carrier:

  • Up to 70% CO2 capture, approximately 50 t/day
  • 2 × 360 m³ deck LCO2 storage tanks, ~21-day storage autonomy
  • Integrated with Wärtsilä scrubbers and WESP

Installation

  • Retrofit: applicable to a wide range of engine configurations; utility tie-ins and integration with existing scrubbers and NOx/PM controls
  • Newbuild: space and weight reserved for the CCS module and LCO2 tanks; CCS-ready scrubbers offer a phased path
  • Design aligned with class requirements, covering pressure systems, hazardous area design and crew procedures

Applications

Vessels operating on any carbon-based fuel (e.g. HFO, MGO, LNG, methanol), in particular tankers, LNG carriers, offshore vessels, bulkers and merchant vessels.
