About
Scandinavian Micro Systems was established in 1977 by Oddbjorn Steinsland in Kolbotn, Norway, initially developing controls for high-pressure water pumps. In 1996 it opened an office in Fort Lauderdale to serve cruise ship customers and promote its LR40 and LR60 gyro repeaters in the US market.
In 2005 the company opened Scandinavian Micro Systems P Ltd in Hyderabad, India, to develop the ScanDisplay software; that unit was discontinued in 2009 and software development, for both ScanDisplay and the embedded software of its navigation instruments, moved to the UK office. From 2018 it introduced new navigation products with DNV-GL type approvals.
