GATE RUDDER® System – Energy-Saving Mechanism
GATE RUDDER® System places two rudder blades on either side of the propeller, cutting rudder resistance, producing extra thrust, reducing cavitation and torque fluctuation, and reducing corrective steering at sea.
Description
The GATE RUDDER® System from Kamome Propeller replaces the conventional rudder behind the propeller with two rudder blades positioned on either side of it. Three mechanisms combine in real sea conditions to deliver energy savings.
How it saves energy
- Lower rudder resistance: moving the rudder blades from behind the propeller to its sides reduces rudder drag; the asymmetric foil sections generate thrust, reducing hull resistance in self-propulsion
- Less cavitation: because the rudder system contributes thrust, the propeller needs less, which reduces cavitation; accelerating and straightening the inflow to the propeller disc also reduces cavitation and torque fluctuation, improving main engine fuel consumption
- Less corrective steering: vessels fitted with the gate rudder tend to show less yaw at sea, reducing the small corrective rudder movements that waste energy
