OceanGlide

Alfa Laval OceanGlide fluidic air lubrication system creates an even, controllable air layer across a ship's flat bottom to cut hull friction and propulsion power; fuel savings up to 10% reported on M/V Tharsis.

Description

Alfa Laval OceanGlide is a patented air lubrication system using fluidic technology. It creates an even, controllable layer of micro air bubbles across the vessel's entire flat bottom, reducing friction between hull and water, so less propulsion power is needed – lowering fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and underwater noise.

How it works

  • The flat bottom is divided into sections, each with its own air distribution band
  • At the rear of each band, a row of fluidic oscillators (no moving parts) releases air evenly using very little compressor power
  • Each band can be controlled independently to optimize the air layer
  • Wing-shaped band profile adds almost no drag when the system is switched off

Key features

  • Fuel-agnostic energy saving
  • Improves EEDI, EEXI and CII scores and limits exposure to carbon taxation
  • Few compressors required (1–3 on average), freely placed
  • No large sea chests and minimal hull penetrations; suitable for newbuilds and retrofits at any shipyard

Reference

First installed on the coaster M/V Tharsis (Tharsis Sea-River Shipping) in one week, achieving fuel savings of up to 10% through reduced propulsion power, with no impact on manoeuvrability or stability; payback through fuel savings in under three years. Rio Tinto has also selected OceanGlide.
