Oceanbird wing sails
Oceanbird rigid wing sails from AlfaWall Oceanbird (Alfa Laval and Wallenius) for wind-assisted or fully sailing newbuilds and retrofits; one Wing 560 can cut RoRo main engine fuel use by 7–10%.
Description
Oceanbird wing sails are rigid, airplane-wing-like sails for wind propulsion of existing and newbuild vessels, either wind-assisted or fully sailing. They are developed by AlfaWall Oceanbird, a 50/50 joint venture between Alfa Laval and Wallenius Lines founded on 1 December 2021.
Key data
- One Oceanbird Wing 560 on an existing RoRo vessel at normal speed can reduce main engine fuel consumption by 7–10% on favourable ocean-going routes
- A full set of wing sails on a newbuild can reduce consumption considerably more
- Also reduces underwater noise pollution
Development status
The technology is in development. A full-scale prototype with a 40-metre-high steel mast on a 100-ton foundation was built in Landskrona; the first vessel with a full-scale wing sail was planned to sail in 2024, with the ambition of a vessel with a full set of six wing sails in 2027.
Applications
Retrofit and newbuild vessels such as RoRo carriers.
