J-Prop 4 Blade Feathering Propeller

4-blade feathering propeller for sailing yachts with helical-geared pitch mechanism, stainless steel and aluminium-bronze construction and externally adjustable pitch; hub sizes from 63 mm (up to 60 HP) to 145 mm (145–400 HP).

Description

The J-Prop 4 Blade Feathering Propeller is a feathering sailboat propeller (US Patent 5232345, 1991) supplied by Beta Marine US. It arrives fully assembled, fits the shaft like a conventional propeller, and its pitch is then set to suit the installation. J-Prop is available in 2, 3 and 4 blade versions, including versions for saildrives (also with rubber dampers).

Key features

  • Helical (continuously engaged) gears keep all blades at identical pitch; large contact area for strength and low wear
  • Components in stainless steel and aluminium-bronze alloys, each chosen for its part (pitch gear, blades, housing, tail-cone) to reduce wear, aid lubrication and minimise corrosion
  • Elliptical blades feather to reduce drag under sail and give equal thrust ahead and astern

Pitch adjustment

Differentially geared: the pitch is set by an internal stop in the adjustable tail-cone that limits planetary gear rotation. To adjust, feather the blades, pull the ogival nose, turn it towards "R" or "L" (right- or left-hand engine rotation) to the notch for the desired pitch, then release it so it seats firmly against the propeller body.
