About
Port Houston was formed in 1911 as the Harris County Houston Ship Channel Navigation District, after Harris County voters approved $1.25 million in bonds to pay the local share of dredging a deep-water channel. The Houston Ship Channel was ceremonially opened at the Turning Basin on November 10, 1914.
The Port is led by a seven-member Board of Port Commissioners and 16 executive staff members. In 2008 it became the first port authority in the world to be ISO-certified for security management. It is investing $2.1 billion landside over the next five years, including $750M at Bayport and $650M at Barbours Cut over 2023–2027.
