About
The Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway was built as a binational partnership between the U.S. and Canada and opened to deep draft navigation in 1959. Administration is shared by the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, a wholly owned U.S. government corporation within the Department of Transportation created by statute on May 13, 1954, and the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, a Canadian not-for-profit corporation; ownership of the Canadian portion remains with the Canadian federal government.
The two entities coordinate operations around the clock, year-round, particularly regarding rules and regulations, day-to-day operations, traffic management, navigation aids, safety, environmental programs, operating dates and trade development.
