Electronic Governor System

Digital governor system with a nuclear-qualified Woodward 505 controller and direct-coupled electro-mechanical actuator, replacing hydraulic steam turbine speed control.

Description

The Electronic Governor System replaces existing hydraulic speed control systems on Curtiss-Wright steam turbines, addressing hydraulic control issues and component obsolescence. It was developed under an agreement with Engine Systems, Incorporated (ESI) and combines a nuclear-qualified Woodward 505 digital controller supplied by ESI, an electro-mechanical direct-coupled actuator, a digital servo drive supplied by Paragon Energy Systems, and speed probes.

Key features

  • Magnetic speed pick-up feeds turbine speed to the 505 controller
  • 4-20 mA demand signal from the controller to the servo drive
  • Actuator mounts directly on the governor valve stem, with internal resolver for position feedback
  • Eliminates the EGM, EGR, remote servo and hydraulic subsystem, mechanical linkage, ramp generator signal converter and voltage dropping resistors
  • 125 VDC supply, steady-state consumption of 1 A or less
  • Operates in mild and hard environmental conditions
