About
The Portadam® cofferdam was invented in 1974 by two engineers in the United Kingdom. In the late 1970s William Streit, who ran a family-owned commercial diving operation in South Jersey, used it to repair a leaking pipeline in a Virginia river, and in 1985 Portadam Inc. was formed in partnership with the inventors.
The company now trades as Water Diversion, LLC, dba Portadam, from Williamstown, New Jersey. It states that its products have been used on more than 6,000 projects worldwide, including work at the Washington Monument and the WWII Memorial Rainbow Pool, and that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers tested its flood barrier system and bought 8,000 linear ft of 5-foot units.
