Tampa Deep Sea Xplorers Device / Instrument
Compact Underwater RGB Lidar Module
Compact RGB Lidar module for small AUVs and ROVs that generates a 3D point cloud with color overlay of the ocean bottom; developed under a NOAA Phase 2 SBIR grant.
Description
TDSX is developing compact underwater Lidar sensing in cooperation with Beam Sea Associates, with funding from a NOAA Phase 2 SBIR grant. The RGB Lidar module is designed to fit on the Barracuda AUV or other modified vehicles and integrates with the NVIDIA Orin Nano CPU/GPU.
Key features
- Generates a 3D point cloud with a color overlay to create a near true color image of the ocean bottom
- Compact format aimed at small to medium sized AUVs and ROVs, where existing underwater Lidar systems are described as too large and expensive
- Integration with the NVIDIA Orin Nano CPU/GPU
- Received two innovation awards at the TechConnect World Innovation Expo in Washington, DC, in June 2023
Applications
- Seafloor imaging from small AUVs and ROVs
